Flint/Steel Standard with bow-drill divot and Ferro Rod Option. High-carbon steel rod is held in place with strong neodymium magnets. Includes a brass-embedded bow-drill divot. Rod can be removed and the 2.5" ferro rod can be positioned for situations with adequate flash-tinder for use with flint/steel may not be available (see images and more info below).

Note: due to the very strong magnets, the steel rod can be hard to remove. When reinstalling BE CERTAIN that the hole in rod is perfectly aligned with slightly raised magnet within the striker body and pressed "firmly" down so there is no gap between rod and striker body showing at either end of the striker.

*The 2.5" ferro rod is included with purchase of this striker, which comes with the high-carbon steel rod preinstalled. See pics for detail on removing the high carbon steel rod, and temporary placement of the ferro rod - a nice type of "backup" in situations where charred or other similar "flash-tinder" may not be available.

Some technical information: All striker rods make use of O1 steel, chosen for it's composition. The O1 steel for the rods has been normalized, then heat-treated in a way to maintain the fairly unstable martensite, then somewhat tempered for a result which produces optimum sparks while slightly reducing some of the brittleness which would otherwise be present. As a result of the quenching, the face-centered cubic austenite transforms to a highly strained body-centered tetragonal form which is supersaturated with carbon.
